Beyond the Bite

Where Innovation Meets Evidence

Most of dentistry treats what it sees. Dr. Shireen Dhanani looks for what connects.

Her TMJ research sits at the intersection of function, wellness, and lasting patient outcomes. For years, temporomandibular joint dysfunction has been treated as an afterthought: palliative advice, a mouth guard, or an injection that wears off in three months and takes muscle tone with it. Dr. Dhanani saw an opportunity to do better and set out to prove it through clinical research.

Published Insights

Dr. Dhanani’s published writing and interviews explore the connections between integrated dentistry, TMJ innovation, and wellness-forward practice models. Her work offers colleagues and industry peers a closer look at the philosophy and clinical thinking that shape her approach to patient care.

From the evolution of TMD treatment to the growing role of whole-person wellness in modern dental practice, these pieces reflect the same research and findings that shape her clinical work, offering a deeper look at how she thinks through the problems the field is still working to solve.

TMJ Innovation and Clinical Studies

Dr. Dhanani was the first doctor in the United States to be invited by BTL Aesthetics to lead a clinical study on EMFACE Functional TMJ, applying technology built for facial aesthetics to the treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

The results were significant. Across 25 patients treated with four 20-minute sessions, 100% reported improved jaw relaxation, 95% reported improved jaw mobility, and 91% reported reduced pain during eating and chewing, with no adverse events. One patient regained 10mm of jaw opening, with her pain fully resolved by the one-month follow-up.

This research is helping establish a non-invasive, evidence-based alternative to traditional TMD treatment, one that avoids the long-term drawbacks of repeated neuromodulator injections and gives both patients and providers a more sustainable path to relief.

Educational Contributions

Dr. Dhanani partners with BTL Aesthetics to educate dentists and healthcare professionals on TMJ innovation, sharing clinical research and outcomes that broaden the field’s approach to TMD treatment. She continues that work through published findings, professional dialogue, and ongoing collaboration with clinicians and researchers exploring the connection between functional dentistry and long-term wellness.

Why This Work Matters

Every study, published finding, and conversation with a fellow provider moves the field closer to care that treats the whole person, not just the symptom in front of it. Research like this does not happen in isolation. It happens because providers are willing to question what has always been done and test whether something better is possible.

That has been the throughline of Dr. Dhanani’s research from the start: proving that dentistry can do more, and giving patients and providers alike a reason to expect it. As TMJ treatment continues to evolve, she remains committed to sharing what she learns, so the field keeps moving forward, not just her own practice.
